The Odd Case of Baby Formula

Published on
February 27, 2025

Remember when baby formula was a scarce resource and locked up in stores? Ever think an excess of baby formula could be a huge problem? I know I didn't, but I have heard the same story half a dozen times from relief organizations in Western North Carolina after hurricane Helene. Many parts of Western NC were cut off from society for a time, and some baby formula was needed. However, the mountain of formula delivered was "enough to feed every baby in the Carolinas" and became overwhelming to many relief orgs.

Multiple orgs reported that they received expired formula, or powdered formula that could not be easily used. Keep in mind, many communities in Western NC did not have working water infrastructure, or if it was working, it was not sanitary enough for infant use. This makes powdered formula much less effective. Time and time again, I heard of volunteer coordinators being left with dozens of pallets of formula that could not be used - taking up valuable space and resources to deal with. Much of it had to be disposed of, or passed along to regional food banks, creating additional logistical work for relief workers to deal with.

This type of problem creates a ton of extra work and hassle for volunteers on the ground who are already spread thin. With Civica, relief organizations can post exactly what formula they do or do not need (e.g. liquid, non-powders, etc.) and donors can see exactly what is needed to minimize waste and effort. Lets optimize your generosity!
